Sermon Notes

Jesus is in the House! Do you believe that? He is here today, our Healer, our Deliverer, our Comforter, our Savior. He’s in the house!

“And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.”

Mark 2:1 KJV

Who knew the KJV could be the most rad?!

The concluding message in this series, we see how becoming a child of God, and an heir of Christ, brings responsibility and opportunity.

We have been adopted into God's family, and because of that have received certain privileges, provision, and therefore - possibilities. You might be surprised by some of what we are privileged to share.

We are adopted into God's family, and because of this, we belong to one another, to a common purpose, with an amazing legacy.

Scared Spitless - January 7, 2018

an inspiring message for an auspicious beginning

Pastor Brenda shares on the day of her commissioning service what fears she may face in the role of lead pastor, and that God and God only is the one who should make you tremble. I will put my hope in Him!

Make the most of every opportunity.

Be encouraged to a life of faithfulness.

Me Too - October 22, 2017

Stare the Monster Down, and Tackle the Tough Issues

VAOG is about to elect a female lead pastor. What does the Bible have to say about this? Pastor Craig discusses some of the tough issues related to women in leadership, especially ministry leadership.

Acting on the Special Abilities of the Holy Spirit

SERIES: Pentecost: Yesterday, Today and Forever

What is my mission? How does God want to work through me in the Spirit's power?

Gifts of the Spirit

SERIES: Pentecost: Yesterday, Today, and Forever

Speaking in tongues is the initial physical evidence of the baptism, but there are other gifts the Holy Spirit wants to impart.

Continuing the conversation on the Biblical background of unknown tongues.

Pentecost - June 11, 2017

SERIES: Pentecost - Yesterday, Today & Forever

Jesus was - and is - God the Father's gift to the whole world. The Holy Spirit is the gift to the church. Jesus, as Lord, is the baptizer with the Holy Spirit. Luke 3:16 - John the Baptist said, "I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with teh Holy Spirit and fire.

Arrival at Pentecost - June 4, 2017

SERIES: FEAST - The Path to Pentecost

Since the day of Christ’s resurrection, we have been traveling this path to Pentecost. The journey has been full and rewarding, but I pray that the experience of Pentecost overshadows any experience along the way.

Feast on Process - May 21, 2017

SERIES: FEAST - The Path to Pentecost

We will encounter messy situations on our journey following Jesus. The process is not always perfect, yet God works through our situations.

Feast Your Eyes: Who's Watching You? - May 14, 2017

SERIES: FEAST - The Path To Pentecost

I have found myself wondering what it was like growing up in Jochebed’s house. We know from the account in Exodus that Moses was nursed at home and then eventually taken to Pharaoh’s daughter to be raised in the Egyptian palace. This is Moses we’re talking about here – the one who wrote Genesis.

Feast on the Ascension of Jesus - May 7, 2017

SERIES: FEAST - The Path to Pentecost

The ascension differs radically from Jesus’ vanishing from the sight of the disciples at Emmaus (31) and similar happenings. There is an air of finality about it. It is the decisive close of one chapter and the beginning of another.

It is the consummation of Christ’s earthly work, the indication to his followers that his mission is accomplished, his work among them come to a decisive end. They can expect to see him in the old way no more.

I hope we can see in the ascension the taking into heaven of the humanity of Jesus. The incarnation is not something casual and fleeting but a divine action with permanent consequences.

The Feast of Peace - April 30, 2017

SERIES: Feast - The Path to Pentecost

To experience God’s peace, we are joining with God in prayer - being on the same page with God in the understanding that He has everything and has already given us everything we need.

Welcome God’s gracious hand into your life, and participate in what he is doing in the world. Jesus was raised by God the Father. God raised Jesus from the dead. Let God raise you up to prayer to experience His peace.

Feast on His Presence - April 23, 2017

SERIES: Feast - The Path To Pentecost

There is something very moving in one of the Lord’s few appearances being given to these humble, quite unknown disciples... Jesus, on the very day of his resurrection, came along side these two people and showed interest in what they were talking about.

The angels first asked, "Why do you seek the living among the dead?" This startling question gets to the root of the matter immediately. Jesus is not to be thought of as dead: therefore he is not to be sought among the dead.

Be Awed by Easter by Giving - April 9, 2017

SERIES: 40 Days of Decrease

Losses do not make you a loser. To turn your loses into wins will involve giving. Planting a seed appears to be a loss to all the seeds in the packet. Jesus death appeared to be a loss at the graveside. God gave His Son to die for us.

A chocolate cake has nothing to do with this sermon, but it sounds so much better than Peter’s Triple Failure, so I went with it instead.

Today we turn our attention to Jesus’ last hours before He was arrested. He knew the end was near. As Dr. Alicia Britt Chole states “Last steps and last stops are weighty indeed. What we do with our final breaths reflects the values we hold dear in life.” So how did Jesus choose to spend His last steps? Let us look at the biblical account of Jesus last stops and last steps.

Today we will see that repentance connects with rejoicing and celebration.

Learn from the people Jesus interacted with on his way to Jerusalem - don't be a rude religious person. Instead be committed to generosity and refuse communal shame.

Our Lent journey together begins by accepting divine decrease.

Jesus has given us His love. Jesus has given us His command. He asks us to keep His command - obey it, in a protective, watchful, way - treat it as something precious - a gift he has shared. And what is His command? Love each other as I have loved you.

Through the love, faith, hope and grace of God we are able to make and keep a faith promise.

What Jesus has to say about unconditional love trumps all our feelings.

Overcome shame through feasting on God's Word.

Jesus faced temptation through his dependence on and proclamation of the Word of God. We can access this power, too!

Every Word of God - January 15, 2017

Would you, consider, total immersion in the Word of God for this 21 day fast?

If you do, I promise you, you will emerge as Jesus did. Full of the Spirit and Power of God.

You will be more in love with God, others and life.

More sorrowful for you sins and failings.

And more resolved to trust God for deliverance, but if not delivered, willing to suffer and suffer long, unto death.

A practical guide for living fresh in 2017.

Starting off the new year with a commitment to authenticity.

This Same Jesus - December 18, 2016

The cord that weaves through every single day, a hope that serves as an anchor, not to this earth, but as a taut-line through the clouds and into the heavens – remember! THIS SAME JESUS, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Get Up and Go - December 11, 2016

Jesus birth transformed the narrative, and sends us places we never thought we'd get to go.

Do Not Be Afraid - December 4, 2016

Overcoming all of our fears is possible.

In this first week of Advent, we look at what IS possible, when NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.

We are encouraged in Colossians 2 by this phrase: "Because you trusted..." Choosing to trust opens the adventure of bold prayer.

Built on a foundation of trust in the finished work of Christ, we can be fully transformed, and thereby pray boldly.

Pastor Eddie shared an inspiring message - "It's a Come Forth Season!"

Is boldness based on a personality trait, or simple and powerful faith?

Today we entered into a time of confession, prayer for our community, and walked through our prayer space for Pop In Prayer, which will be open Tuesdays through Election Day.

Stepping Up - September 4, 2016

Once we understand we are equal in God's eyes, and each one is able to receive His empowerment for service, what remains is to step up into what God has called you to do. Not in your own strength or skill set, but according to His power at work in you.
